How doors work
Safety first, then convenience, then looks. That is the order we think about garage doors, and it is the order these articles follow. Start with the sensor test; it takes a minute.

Repair & Maintenance
Can I do these checks myself between visits?
The three owner checks, yes: the manual balance test from the closed position, the board test for contact reversal and the photo-eye test with a broom handle through the beam. Industry guidance recommends all three monthly. What stays with a technician is anything that involves loosening, winding or unhooking springs, cables, drums or bottom brackets, and any adjustment to the opener's force settings. Can you replace my rollers with quieter ones during the tune-up?
Often, yes, if you decide you want them and stock is on the truck. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run noticeably quieter than plain steel rollers and need no lubricant. Rollers on the middle sections can be changed with the door clamped in the track; the bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which hold spring tension, and are changed as part of a separate job. The technician can tell you how many are worn and what the change would involve. Garage Door Tune-Up
My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?
Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How do you work out which make and model my door is?
The manufacturer's label is the starting point. It is often a sticker on the end of a section, on the inside of the top section or on the vertical track, and it usually gives the model or series, a date and sometimes a colour code. Failing that, the panel design, section heights, thickness, joint profile and hinge spacing narrow it down, and the distributor can usually confirm the model from photographs and measurements. Springs & Hardware
How many rollers does a garage door have?
A standard four-section residential door has ten: one at each end of the three hinge lines between sections, one in each of the two top fixtures and one in each bottom bracket. A five-section door carries twelve, and taller doors more still. The technician counts and inspects every one, because replacing the full set together keeps the door's travel and sound even from side to side. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Do the rollers get replaced with the hinges?
They are checked every time and replaced when they need it. The roller stem sits in a tube on the edge hinge, so when that hinge comes off the roller is already in hand, and fitting a new one adds a minute. A wheel that is cracked, flat-spotted or grinding on its bearing is the sort of thing that strained the hinge, so leaving it would ask the new hinge to carry the same load. Why does the door catch at the same spot every trip?
A catch that repeats in one place is the signature of a local track fault: a dent, a spread section, a step at a joint, or a bracket that has let the track drift. Each roller reaches the flaw at the same point in the travel and bumps over it. The technician finds the spot by running a roller through the channel by hand, then dresses or replaces that length and checks the rest of the run for the same problem. Is cable work different on a door with extension springs?
The idea is the same and the route is different. Instead of winding onto a drum, the cable runs from the bottom bracket up over a pulley at the front of the track, back over a pulley on the spring, and to an adjusting clip. The technician relaxes the springs by opening and clamping the door, replaces worn pulleys along with the cable, sets both clips the same, and confirms a containment cable runs through each spring. Openers & Access
Why does my door go back up when I try to close it?
The opener believes something is in the way. Either the photo-eye beam near the floor was broken, misaligned or blocked, or the door met more resistance than its force setting allows, often from a frozen seal, stiff rollers or a travel limit set slightly too long so the door hits the slab. The indicator light on the head unit usually tells which of the two it was, and the technician confirms it by testing rather than guessing. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
What should I check before calling?
With the door closed, pull the red handle and try lifting the door by hand; note whether it is heavy or stays up on its own. Look at the chain for slack, rust or a broken link, and at the head for pale shavings. Note whether the motor runs at all, whether the door stops short or reverses, and where the trolley sits on the rail. The model on the head's label and a photo of the rail help too. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
What does out of phase mean, and why does my door stop short?
When the belt has been off the sprocket, or the motor has run without it, the motor's idea of where the door is no longer matches where the trolley sits. The door then stops short at one end however the limits are turned. The technician lifts the belt off, runs the sprocket to its closed position, refits the belt with the trolley at the closed end and relearns the limits. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Chain or belt: which should I choose?
Both move the same doors, so the choice is about sound and setting. Chain is the sturdy, simple workhorse and a fine fit for a detached garage or a workshop where a little noise is nobody's concern. Belt is the pick when a bedroom, nursery or office shares a wall or floor with the garage, because it starts and stops softly and hums rather than rattles. If the ceiling is crowded, a wall-mounted unit beside the spring shaft removes the rail altogether. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can the replacement be coordinated with a renovation?
Yes. Share plans for cladding, trim, lighting, ceiling storage, electrical work and floor changes before measurement. Their sequence may affect finished opening dimensions or track clearance. The door proposal can then state which conditions must be complete, who handles each preparation item and when final measurements are taken for the order. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
How should I prepare the garage for installation?
Move vehicles out and clear floor space across the full width of the opening plus a useful working area inside. Remove hanging items, bicycles and storage that intrude into the track or ceiling zone. Provide access to electrical controls and keep pets away from the work area. The installer can identify any unusually large staging space needed for wide sections beforehand. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How should I care for the replacement through winter?
Keep the threshold clear of packed snow and salt, wipe residue from exposed hardware, and watch that the bottom seal releases cleanly after freeze-thaw weather. Look for corrosion, loose visible fasteners, or uneven seal contact during routine observations. Springs, cables, and bottom brackets remain high-tension components, so adjustments are left to technicians with the proper tools. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What measurements are needed before ordering the door?
The survey records clear opening width and height, side room, headroom and backroom, often at more than one point. It also checks floor level, jamb and header condition, ceiling obstacles, track supports and opener position. These measurements determine door size and hardware layout. Exterior trim and the desired panel proportions are documented so technical fit and visual fit agree. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
