The common springs, cables, rollers, hinges, photo-eyes and opener parts ride along on every trip to Lambeth. That means most repairs are finished the day the technician arrives, and when a door needs something unusual, he measures it properly so the right part comes on the second visit. We serve White Oak as well.

The fix, explained · Lambeth
The fix
Torsion spring replacement restores the counterweight that makes a garage door light enough to lift. A sectional door often weighs more than a fridge, and the spring above the opening carries nearly all of that load, storing energy as the door closes and releasing it as it opens.
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

The fix
Older doors and workshop doors tend to come off their tracks for reasons of wear rather than impact. Steel rollers lose their bearings and grind down to the stem, wood jambs dry out and let lag screws spin, back hangs loosen and the horizontal track drifts out of level.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

The fix
Winter is hard on the bottom of a garage door. Slush and road salt run off the car and pool exactly where the cables loop onto the bottom brackets, and wire rope that is wet and salted for four months a year rusts from the inside out.

What you have afterwards is a door that behaves like a much lighter object. Both corners leave the floor together, the door holds still when you stop it at waist height, and it settles onto the floor instead of slamming.

The fix
Most households meet the release for the first time in a power outage, usually in winter. The door is shut, the car is inside, and the red handle is the only way to move the door.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
The fix
Think of a command travelling through the system. Your thumb presses a button; the radio signal reaches the receiver; the logic board decides to move; the motor turns; a gear drives a chain, belt or screw; the trolley pulls the arm; the arm moves the door.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

Landlords and property managers in Lambeth get a written summary after every visit: the address, what was found, what was replaced, and what is likely to need attention next. Tenants get a door that works and remotes that behave. Everyone knows where things stand without a second phone call.
London and Lockwood Park
We show, then tell. Worn cables, tired springs and misaligned sensors are pointed out on the door itself, so the explanation makes sense.
Clean-up included. Old parts are removed, surfaces wiped and the floor swept before we consider the visit complete.
The right repair for your situation. Some doors deserve a full refresh; others need one part. We help you weigh that against how long you plan to keep the door.

Owners of older homes in Lambeth often need work on extension springs, wood doors and early openers, while newer homes tend to need torsion springs, belt-drive openers and insulated steel panels. We service both generations of door, and the pages below explain what applies to yours.

During the power outage you pulled the red cord and tried to lift the door by hand. It felt like lifting a piano, and when you let go part-way it sank back toward the floor on its own.

2 / 10
The T-shaped handle on the outside turns a full quarter, exactly as it has for twenty years, but nothing moves behind it. No clunk from the bars, no click at the tracks. The handle has stopped talking to the lock.

3 / 10
New springs went in last year and the door balances well, yet it still clicks along the ceiling track like a train over rail joints. The wheels are the originals, worn to an oval, and the noise follows them from one end of the travel to the other.

4 / 10
Standing inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy. A handful of broken wires stick out like a bottle brush and the steel underneath is brown.

5 / 10
Press the remote and the motor runs its full cycle, lights on, the usual whir, but the door does not move a centimetre. Up at the trolley, the belt is hanging loose where a small plastic clip used to hold it.

6 / 10
On bright mornings the door will not close, then by lunchtime it behaves itself. The garage faces the low sun, and the light reaches straight across the floor to one of the little black sensors.

7 / 10
You want windows for natural light without turning the garage into a cold glass wall. The glazing layout, insulated sections and door weight all need to be selected as one working system.

8 / 10
The current double door shudders when pressure changes outside, and daylight appears briefly along one edge. Its tracks are light, the jamb material is aging, and no one knows which reinforcement was originally specified.

9 / 10
The operator runs and the drive chain moves, yet the sectional door hesitates near the floor. It feels unusually heavy during manual operation, pointing to a counterbalance problem rather than a simple control-station fault.

10 / 10
The wall control asks the door to close, but the operator hums and stops. The curtain remains overhead while the control light and the photoelectric sensors suggest that the powered system needs a connected diagnosis.

52%
Older homes. About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In a mature neighbourhood the garage door is often the single largest feature of the front elevation, so keeping the original look matters. Modern insulated doors come in raised-panel and carriage styles that echo the older designs while running on today's torsion hardware.
49%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).
Where housing is mixed, the doors are mixed as well: wide insulated doubles, narrow singles in rows and the occasional rolling door on a small commercial unit at the corner. Spring type, cable length and opener strength are matched to each door individually.
A door that still runs after a bump can still be carrying the effects of it. The force travels from the dent into the roller, the track, the bottom bracket and the cable on that side, and any of them can be nudged enough to change how the door hangs. An inspection follows that path and tells you whether the mark is cosmetic, whether a part needs work, or whether the balance has shifted.
The knob is meant to grip the square spindle with a set screw, and that screw has loosened or the spindle's flat has worn so the knob no longer bites. Sometimes the spindle itself has sheared inside the door. The technician tightens a fresh set screw onto a proper flat or fits a new spindle of the correct length, and the knob and outside handle move as one again.
The door is run through several cycles with the technician watching each wheel stay seated, then balanced by hand with the opener released to confirm it holds at halfway. The top section is checked for a tight seal at the header, the hinge and bracket fasteners are snugged, and the opener's force and reversal are tested with a 1-1/2 inch block in the door's path. The industry checklist for a residential door covers exactly these points, and they are all part of finishing the job.
Fraying is individual wires breaking, and it comes from two things: bending fatigue where the cable wraps the drum or pulley, and rubbing where it touches something it should not, such as a bent track edge, a rough drum groove, a seized pulley or a bracket sitting crooked after a bump. Corrosion speeds both. The technician looks for the rough edge so the new cable does not meet it.
